NORMAN — For the second consecutive season, OU softball is not the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Sooners are the No. 2 seed, it was announced Sunday, as Texas A&M was selected as the top overall seed. OU and the Aggies were named co-champions of the SEC Tournament Saturday after the title game was canceled due to weather.
The Sooners (45-7) will take on Boston U (39-17) to open the tournament at 5 p.m. Friday at Love’s Field.
Cal (35-19) and Omaha (39-11) are also in the Norman Regional.
The Sooners won the SEC regular-season title in their first season in the conference.
After losing its final regular-season series to Florida on the road, OU defeated LSU and Arkansas in the conference tournament. The title game was expected to go a long way in deciding which team would receive the top overall seed.
“As long as we’re in the top — I think the top five means something for sure,” said Sooners coach Patty Gasso. “But it’s such a crapshoot. You just don’t know who you’re going to get — certain teams you don’t want, certain teams you don’t care, what have you. It just kinda depends how it all plays out.”

Gasso has now reached the tournament for the 30th time at OU.
The program made history with its fourth consecutive national title a season ago. Gasso will look to chase five in a row with a roster featuring several newcomers such as Ailana Agbayani, Abigale Dayton, Gabbie Garcia, Sam Landry, Audrey Lowry and Isabella Smith, paired with returners Kierston Deal, Nelly McEnroe-Marinas, Ella Parker, Kasidi Pickering and Cydney Sanders.
The Sooners started the season with a 28-game winning streak before falling to Missouri March 22 on the road.
OU then dropped two of three to Tennessee at home to end March and two of three to Alabama on the road in mid-April before sweeping Texas at home in late April.
The Sooners haven’t lost a regional game since 2019 and have made eight consecutive Women’s College World Series appearances and won the last four titles. OU has won 14 consecutive regionals.
Friday’s game will air on ESPNU.
