So... Whisenhunt is now 3-17 in in his last 20 games as a HC with the Titans.

Or 8-31 in his last 39 going back to 2012 with us. Or 16-39 in his last 55 if you're being generous and going back to the 8-8 season he had here in 2011.

Yikes. I always liked him but this is atrocious.

The gameplan today was apparently to try to block JJ Watt with one guy. That worked well. :mulli:

Whisenhunt

His last 35 games he is 4-31 as head coach! Arians is 27-14. What a great decision that was.

Difference is, Arians came into a team that already had a decent core. Granted some skill positions were lacking(QB, RB) but for the most part, he already had some talented players. Whiz didn't have that in Tennessee. That team is in a rebuilding/retooling mode. This is why he isn't on the hot seat just yet.

Still, he's one of those guys who is a far better coordinator than head coach. He and Wade Philips would make a great pair of coordinators, but wouldn't want them in the top chair.
Or Norv and Romeo, or any other pair of guys who are superior even with a lack of talent on their side of the ball, but who aren't skilled as skilled at leadership as they are at management.

Don't know how good a coach KW is, but he does (supposedly) have a QB of the future. If the team gets the LSU RB in the next draft, they should have something to build around. Of course that's not to say that KW will be the HC.

Yup, not a good head coach. His success here was more a product of Warner/Haley. I laughed when most of the media was talking him up after "resurrecting" River's career. I got the same amusement when the media tried to paint Mark Trestman as a competent head coach but we all knew better.

??

He turned over the roster.

Fitz, CC, Dock, Peterson, Bethel and Floyd were what he inherited. And that's basically all that is left - dock.

Wasn't there something like 37 new players on the final roster in BA's first year?

Meanwhile, Keim keeps searching for help. He made 193 roster moves in his first season, turning over more than half the roster while doubling the team's win total. He created a Castaway Bay for players that needed new beginnings. His proactive approach on bringing in new faces every week has served the team extremely well on two fronts:

Edit, that's the only stat I found...turned over more than half the roster. That's a rebuild.

Whisenhunt should have taken the Lions job where there was some talent. Of course look at them today too.

I've always like Whiz but his record the last 3 years is very hard to defend.

He is not a good head coach, worse than I thought - I gave him a Jeff Fisher comparison, but Fisher at least doles out solid defense and ST play on his 8-8 teams, Whiz isn't even doing that.

I also don't buy the bad roster excuse - we have seen many bad rosters play better than what the Titans have put out there two years running now under Whiz.

Whiz also brought in an offensive coordinator without any experience - some people never learn.

And the Whis apologist crew continues to shrink.

The Steelers have easily the best record of picking head coaches....When they passed on him, we should have seen that as a sign.

"But....but....he took us to a SB!!!!"

If Whis had picked even an average DC and dumped Grimm, maybe I'd be inclined to give him some credit, but until proven otherwise, we were there in spite of him, not because of him

Whiz is a good coach, but a terrible talent scout. His demise began when he wanted a bigger role outside of just coaching. He's better suited for X's and O's. I hope for his sake he's relieved of the Titans job and goes back to being an OC.

I still appreciate all he did to help this organization become relevant. Undeniably, he set the table for the continued success we're experiencing.

I'll still remember Whisenhunt fondly even if the Kolb-Skelton-Hall-Anderson-Lindley Era was one of the biggest blunders in the franchise's recent history. We could've won a couple more division titles if he could pick a decent QB.

People in Tenn might disagree with you. "The system works" is rearing its ugly head.

I feel sorry for Whiz, but he hasn't changed a bit or learned from his mistakes here. If I ran the Titans, I would fire him immediately - they are playing THAT badly.

Frankly, I don't care what people in Tennessee think. That whole organization is a disaster, top to bottom, and is in need of a full reboot. They drafted a QBoF, who is going to be really good; however, he is still a rookie. Also, where is the talent elsewhere? Their receivers suck, their o-line is terrible, they have nobody at running back, and they have few, if any, significant pieces on defense. That's on the front office and to some degree on Whiz for chiming in on those personnel decisions.

Talent wise, it's the worst team in the NFL.

I don't buy these types of arguments. Coaches influence the roster - they have had two rounds of roster changes to get something tolerable on the field and have failed. Coaches haven't made the team even competitive. It is inexcusable.

Regardless of circumstances, Whiz has failed so far and will likely to continue to fail because he needs a strong GM to handle his strong stubbornness.

Not to the degree you think. Let me show you two examples:

Look at the Cardinals. BA and Keim have an understanding about staying in their own lanes. They've been asked on multiple occasions about that dynamic, and it's a mutual understanding about how Keim brings in the guys who will fit Arians's scheme. I think the only move that BA lobbied for heavily was to sign Drew Stanton. The team is looking at three double-digit win seasons in a row.

Now, look at the Eagles. Chip Kelly has taken over the reigns as coach and the person who has final say in player aquisitions and departures. He rids of a productive running back in McCoy in favor of getting Murray, who is struggling behind the garbage o-line. Kelly makes an unnecessary trade for Bradford, who's been marginal at best and is an injury waiting to happen. Kelly has basically overturned Reid's entire roster with only marginal production to speak of. Yes, he won 20 games his first two seasons, but as soon as he took over in the player/personnel department, the team has looked incredibly mediocre.

When coaches influence rosters, more often than not, it's a disaster. When coaches coach, and GMs GM, and there's an effective working relationship and mutual understanding between them, that's the ideal situation for any team.

Whiz's biggest mistake is not with coaching, it's with his own stubbornness and not understanding where his primary responsibilities lie. Being a head coach is a lot of work by itself; taking over GM responsibilities is career suicide, which Whiz's has committed twice. This does not make him a bad coach by any stretch of the imagination, it's about him doing more than his job title entails.

And build an offensive line, and draft better, and sign better free agents.
