Whisenhunt caused his own problems, but the Cards front office didn't help. No one stood up to him on personnel. First he brought in too many Pitt cronies as coaches and players. He wanted to out-Pittsburgh the Steelers and prove they made the wrong choice. The special teams and O-line suffered the most from bad coaching, though a general lack of quality personnel hurt.

As to Leinart, he was immature. Most incoming "star" QBs are. Look at Leinart's first year and you can see the potential, but he wasn't ready to handle the fame. Warner should have started. Even when he struggled you could see the Warner was making things happen, if they'd have given him more with which to work sooner he'd have been even better.

I am on the side of those who say Warner and Haley took the Cards to the big game. They worked best when Whiz stayed out of the way, but Whiz was always trying to prove he was the man. I don't know if he can humble himself enough to be a good coordinator again. The previous posts are correct. He is incredibly stubborn and inflexible.

Whiz will eventually fade away, but Warner is HOF.

Leinart's a goof. Whis deserved to be fired, he's been horrible. All this talk about Warner/Haley begs the question of how to win a title without a great QB, or at least a great season. It is rarely accomplished.

Exactly! A good coach can take a dumpster fire of a roster and at least make it competitive.

The only teams that won without a great QB were the 80 & 83 Raiders(Plunkett), 90 Giants(Hostetler), 91 Redskins(Rypien), 00 Ravens(Dilfer..in fact this is the only Super Bowl where both QB's were somewhat subpar as the Giants had Collins), & 02 Bucs(Johnson). In short it doesn't happen often but if you look at these teams, they had some other aspect or that particular QB had an amazing season. Rypien and Johnson come to mind. There are a plethora of average QB's who made it and lost. Ferregamo, Collins, Gannon, Morton(X2), Eason/Grogan, Morrall, Woodley, Humphries, Chandler, to name several(there are more). In short, for the most part, you can't win without an above average QB. If you have an average QB, you better have some really above average talent around him.

I don't disagree with your point, but I don't know that I'd classify Gannon as average when he made the Super Bowl. If you look at his whole career, there are a lot of average numbers but when he got to the Raiders, he elevated his game. 114 TD/50 INT, 2 All-Pro's, 4 Pro-bowls and an MVP is better than average. He was the perfect Gruden QB which Gruden never really ever found again.
