So now coaches will be able to challenge NON calls. This has gotten completely out of hand.

The NFL is completely clueless. The reason for all these bad calls is twofold - one, some of the rules have gotten ridiculously over-complex. You need a freaking lawyer to determine what constitutes a legal catch nowadays. Secondly, for whatever reason, the quality of the officials on the field has declined precipitously over the last decade or so. It's gotten so bad that you get to the conference championship and Super Bowl games, you're watching at home and you see who the ref is, who got there on MERIT based on how he graded out over the season - and it's one of these HORRENDOUS guys that you would have thought would have graded out at the bottom. They ALL stink, which is how this happens.

Fix the rulebook, quit screwing around with stuff like kickoffs, and above all, hire some competent referees. It can't be that difficult. Fix whatever is causing them to be clueless out there. Are some of them on the take? Quite possibly. In fact I'd be surprised if there aren't at least 2-3 bad apples out there right now who are in bed with the mob or other bad actors.

This is the same rule instituted in the CFL in 2014.

So the horrible interception thrown by Brees in overtime made no never mind? While I agree that the non-call was egregious and ridiculous, it's not like the Saints didn't have their chance to win.

One could also say Sean Payton should have run the ball in the final two mins. What makes that call so terrible is the fact that call would havs end the game. Period.

That may be but it doesn't remove the fact that, as you said, Payton over coached and then Brees throws a terrible interception in overtime. The Saints had plenty of chances to win, they just didn't take advantage.

I have heard some discussion on quality of officials on the decline and there is a theory out there that I believe in. The career path of a budding official , referee, umpire is extremely arduous and unrewarding. Every official begins their "training" at the bottom of the ladder. Pee wee, little league, middle school, with petty cash salary. They invoke the ire of crazy assed parents , fans, players, etc. If they stick that period out they may actually graduate to high school games where it is equally insane and low paying. Maybe Community College comes calling for the best. If they are not shell shocked by then maybe, just maybe the best and the brightest make it to NCAA level all the while supporting themselves and their family with an outside primary career. If an official ever makes it to the professional leagues all the while working their way through a mine field of scrutiny and evaluation and a paltry paycheck then the stress goes nuclear. BTW, the timeline is now at least 20 years in the making. Who does that?

It wasn't even a scoring play, so you couldn't say that had the refs pulled their heads out and actually thrown the flag that New Orleans definitely goes on to win the game.

Or fumble a snap, or get a procedural penalty, or have the field goal blocked, etc. Nothing is a given. It was astonishing that the play wasn't flagged. But would it have been any more astonishing if Unger/Brees botched a snap? Or the Rams blocked a chip shot? Or Aaron Donald punched the ball out?

The Rams won. The call was not right but it's a whole game that got them where they where and more importantly a whole season of great play. The championship is about which team is the best, I think if football was not so taxing and the teams played a series of games as basketball, the Rams talent would win the day. They are the NFC champs and have my respect... and they are from our division

Again, they had every opportunity to stop the Rams on the next drive. They did not.

I'm not sure how this 'slows down the game.' You still only have a maximum of 3 challenges per game. PI calls are arguably the biggest ones in the game due to the field position you could gain/lose. It is more important that they get it right than quibbling over a couple of wasted minutes.

That play was egregious. That type of “non call” is the biggest reason why this league is loosing the past few years.

That play was over the top ridiculous; a pop warner zebra should have been able to read that after a few hours of running around to buy his elaborate uniform and exngraved whistle. 3/4 or 3/5 flags should have shot into the air like rockets....

I don’t necessarily agree with the plan the league has with the added elements of replay, but in big Time professional football, those calls need to be made... that game was in the bag if that call was made. Saints should have faced the Pats in this last SB.

Saints/Patriots would have been a much better SB- the rams got out classed in that boring game.
