OT: Brandon Jacobs Helmet Incident

Hypothetically speaking obviously. If you were in the stands and a player threw their helmet at you into the crowd would you give it back? I say no.

I ask because I think they forced the patron who had Brandon Jacobs helmet to give it back. Personally I don't think they had a legal right to force him to do anything.

That's why I said hypothetical and a "player" Say it was a Cardinals player? Would you voluntarily give it back? Do you thing they have a right to take it back?

I'd weigh how much I wanted to stay at the game. If I thought it was cooler to have a game-worn helmet then watch the rest of the game, I'd bolt with it.

If it were a Cards or a Bears helmet, I'd likely try to make off with it (the rest of my family are Bears fans--i'd give it to my bro for xmas).

No, uniforms (helmet included) remain the property of the club. Just heard a piece about this on a podcast hosted by Ross Tucker (former NFL lineman). He asked if he could take his helmet when dallas cut him and they said "sure, but it'll cost you $200." Same deal with the jerseys. Some clubds don't even want their players to walk off with them.

And, legally there is no difference between the helmet and the ball. If they decided they wanted the balls back, they'd have the right to get them, too. But I guess the league sees those as more disposable.

I probably would have bolted right then and there. By that time, the game was already out of hand.

With as much publicity and discussion that Jacobs received (and a fine) for throwing his helmet into the stands, the helmet itself would have some re-sale value. I would guess the going rate on E-Bay would be far more than the cost of the game tickets. That would be my route.

I guess they might worry about players just handing them out after games. That could get really pricey.

I remember that NFL used to or maybe still does fine players who tossed balls into the stands to cover the cost. The team could just do the same.

Well, a fan owns that seat for 3 hours. I'd charge the team a "rental fee" for placing their helmet there.

I understand that the player 'owns' the helmet...but once they throw it into the stands....they are giving up their ownership....just like a thrown ball into the stands.

A thrown ball into the stands 'on purpose' is charged to the player and the person catching it can keep it...unlike a Kicked ball that enters the stands via....wild kick or kicked over the net MUST be returned.

If they were NOT my season tickets....you bet I'd keep it. I would have preferred if the helmet was from the team I didn't like and it happen to cut me....$$$$....

I agree with the other guys who state they would have taken off with it...that would have been the best move as there is NO WAY if they left right away that they could have caught up with you....they can't charge you with stealing as it was given to you.

The fan should sue the team for the value of one game used helmet. My bet is the team settles for an authentic helmet and a few autographed items.

To walk and get nothing is ignorant in this situation...then again he was with his kid....I would have handed it over too.

(I have been at baseball games where a batter has - accidentally - thrown his bat into the stands. An usher will substitute an extra so the batter can have his bat back. I know about players having favorite bats and all that but I always thought that was kind of a cheap deal.)

I would have bolted for the exits and been gone before anyone but Jacobs knew I had it. Missed opportunity for those fans. That could have brought big bucks.

i would have sat right there and not given it up. Might have even put it on and strapped up. Jacobs endangered that fan by throwing a helmet into the stands, if that thing hit him in the head he could have been seriously injured. Lame move by the Giants and COlts

Those fans tried that unsuccessfully. Hard to hang onto a helmet while being tazed. Not that those fans were tazed but would have got to that point eventually.

If they took it away, I would call team's front, pitch a fit, and ask for at least a replica helmet with autographs. If not, Id go to the media and explain the events that transpired. It gives them a chance to save face. If they didnt, the bad press would not look good. JMHO

He should have been able to keep it. IF the helmet had hit someone (a kid for example) and they had been hurt the Giants sure would have a whole different tone about this incident. They should consider themselves lucky that Jacobs didnt' hurt someone and get them sued.

OT: lol this reminds me of the Sun Devil Stadium days. My season tix were in the end zone and whenever a ball would miss the net the fans would try to take off with it and security would chase. I remember one incident where these guys kept passing it back and forth playing 'keepaway' with the usher. The whole crowd was laughing, they ofcouse kicked them out. I had my whole escape planned out if I ever caught one, but I never did.

Personally, I think if someone throws something away, then it's fair game.
