The Orlando Magic are preparing for their final 2026 NBA Summer League game in which they will face the Boston Celtics, and during Orlando’s win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, general manager Anthony Parker joined NBA on ESPN to discuss what he has seen from the Magic during Summer League.
Before diving into his analysis, Parker gave a shoutout to David Steele, the longtime play-by-play voice of the Magic who announced his retirement on Tuesday.
"Well, first, before I say anything, I have to shout out David Steele, who was a Magic voice, play-by-play guy, announced his retirement yesterday," Parker said. "And, man, just want to say congratulations. He probably hates that I'm shouting it out. He doesn't like the attention, but I'm so happy that he's part of our land of Magic history. So, congratulations to him."
The Magic beat the 76ers, 99-92, and Jase Richardson led the way with 25 points, which elicited praise from Parker.
"It's good to see our guys," Parker said. "You know, I think Jase has gotten off to a fast start. We've seen him kind of settling in and getting comfortable and, you know, understanding what he needs to do and where he needs to be and kind of avoiding the dead ends.
"And he's playing confident, hitting his shot and making all the hustle plays," Parker added. "Noah Penda, the same thing. So, good defending and getting out and playing the right way."
Among those also in attendance from the organization was new head coach Sean Sweeney, and Parker discussed the process of his hiring.
"Well, first of all, you know, we interviewed him during the playoffs," Parker said. "So, he had a full-time job on one side and just the amount of preparation he came in with, knowing what he was doing, you know, in the playoffs. And so, we were just so impressed with that.
"And I think the other thing is just the alignment, how he saw our roster, how he saw our team, and how we need to play to be successful," Parker added. "You know, I think he aligned in that,
he's intense, he's passionate, he's a teacher. And, you know, we've been really happy with what we've seen so far."
Under Sweeney, Parker is exuding confidence over what the Magic can be, but he knows how important consistency is.
"I think we're at our best, [when] we are an elite defensive team," Parker said. "We win the possession battle, we're putting pressure on the rim, and then we're, like, making the right plays and taking advantage of two guys converging on the ball. So, that's what we want to do.
"I think, you know, we as a front office believe our group has what it takes," he added. "And more importantly, they believe they have what it takes. And I think, you know, when we're whole, we're one of the better teams in the conference, and we just have to be more consistent with it."
