The Oregon Ducks' baseball program has had a rough start to the offseason. Freshman standouts Angel Laya and Naulivou Lauaki Jr., both of whom figured to be central figures in Oregon's lineup moving forward, entered the transfer portal and removed some of the Ducks' biggest producers from the future lineup.
A pair of gut punches to the program hasn't deterred Mark Wasikowski from finding creative ways to fill the roster with quality talent. The Ducks landed a second transfer commitment, with Long Beach State infielder Jake Evans announcing his commitment to the program on Instagram.
Evans will come to Eugene for his junior season after two seasons with the Dirtbags in his hometown. He took a big step forward as a sophomore, starting 33 games and hitting .364. Evans can play both second and third base, and with Oregon expecting both positions to be vacated after Drew Smith and Ryan Cooney are likely to move to the next level, he is an ideal fit for the program in a time of need.
Evans is a very comparable player to Cooney, hitting for average and finding a knack for getting on base, rather than mashing the ball out of the ballpark.
He hit just three home runs last season while compiling a .483 on-base percentage and striking out only 20 times. If he can continue to develop, Evans could become another key figure in the lineup, thanks to his contact skills. He led Long Beach State with a 1.025 OPS and 12 doubles en route to a second-team All-Big West selection.
Oregon now has two transfers coming in, with University of Tampa transfer outfielder Jake Books joining Evans in Eugene.
