Having had success along the defensive line in recent seasons, with Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti specifically both harboring hopes of being first-round picks in the 2027 NFL draft, the Oregon Ducks are one of the prominent programs for defensive players in the trenches.

Of course, much of that recent success has been with defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi, who accepted the head coaching job with the California Golden Bears in December. He got right to work in recruiting — with 2027 four-star EDGE Troy Bowens in his sights.

Rivals' Adam Gorney reported that Oregon was an early frontrunner for Bowens, but that changed once Lupoi took the job at Cal. Now, the Golden Bears are the team to beat.

That doesn't mean that the Ducks are giving up though, as Ducks' new defensive coordinator Chris Hampton took an in-home visit to Bowens on Monday night.

"The meeting was great," Bowens said. "He’s a great guy and I enjoyed all of it. Got to know a bit about him and about Oregon for sure."

Despite that, Bowens revealed that he loved that Lupoi is at Cal and that "Cal is definitely No. 1 right now."

Also in contention alongside Oregon and Cal is Washington and Stanford, with others potentially joining the fray as well.

The attention for Bowens is well worth it, as he's a four-star and the No. 20 defensive lineman and No. 168 player overall in the 2027 class, per 247 Sports Composite. He's also the No. 17 player in California, as he competes for Sutter High School.

Only time will tell if Dan Lanning, Hampton and the Ducks can beat out Lupoi for Bowens' commitment in the coming months.
