On Monday afternoon, the Calgary Flames, along with the Calgary Sports & Entertainment Corporation, announced the passing of Alvin G. Libin.
Born in 1931 in Calgary, AB, Libin was a businessman and philanthropist who became one of the five owners who bought the Flames in 1994. By 2012, the owners had become the majority operating partners of the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders. At that time, the once-named Calgary Flames Limited Partnership became the CSEC.
In 2026, the group owns the Flames and Stampeders, the Western Hockey League's Calgary Hitmen, the American Hockey League's Calgary Wranglers, the National Lacrosse League's Calgary Roughnecks, and the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Outside sports, Libin has one of the most impressive philanthropic resumes in Calgary; he served on various boards, including Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Calgary Foothills Hospital and Chairman of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, to name just two of the many positions he held.
Thanks to his countless efforts in the community and in medical research, Libin received the Order of Canada in 2001. In addition, he was a recipient of the Alberta Order of Excellence and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
At the time of his passing, Libin was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Balmon Investments Ltd, a private management and investment company. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mona, in 2006.
