The first trade for Sunny Mehta as Devils general manager has sent a former top draft pick away to Canada.

The Devils have dealt former number two overall pick Simon Nemec to the Calgary Flames, along with right winger Maxim Tsyplakov, in exchange for two conditional first-round picks, a 2026 second-round pick and defenseman Etienne Morin.

Nemec was selected second overall in the 2022 NHL Draft by the Devils and played 155 games across the last three seasons. Nemec's biggest moment in New Jersey was a double-overtime game-winning goal against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 of the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 25, 2025.

Dealing away Nemec ends months of speculation between Nemec and the organization. The 22-year old defenseman had his entry-level contract expire in the offseason and was considered a restricted free agent seeking a new contract. Nemec had switched agents prior to his contract's expiration and rumors swirled that Nemec was seeking a contract extension that mirrored an annual $9 million salary obtained by Luke Hughes.

There are conditions for when the Devils will obtain those first-round picks. Devils will acquire a first-round pick originally owned by the Vegas Golden Knights that is top-10 protected for the 2027 NHL Draft. Calgary had obtained the pick in a trade for Rasmus Andersson in January. If the pick will be a top-10 pick, Vegas will keep it and the Devils will obtain the Golden Knights' first round pick in 2028.

The other first-round pick has similar conditions to it. The Devils will acquire a first-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft originally owned by the Colorado Avalanche and obtained by Calgary in a trade for Nazem Kadri in March. However, a prior trade by the Avalanche with the Toronto Maple Leafs for Nicholas Roy protects their 2027 first-round pick within the top 10 picks. If Colorado falls out of the top 10 in the 2027 NHL Draft, Toronto will receive Colorado's first-round pick in 2028 and the first-round pick the Devils just acquired will come in 2029.

Tsyplakov was acquired by the Devils as part of the Ondrej Palat trade with the Islanders in January 2026. Morin is a 21-year old defenseman drafted by the Flames in the second round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Morin played in 42 games with the Flames' AHL affiliate last season.
