Say what you will about Ty Simpson as a prospect, but it’s hard to find a better fit between a quarterback and team than him and the Los Angeles Rams. He’s a good blend of pocket passer and mobile quarterback, which is exactly the type of player who could excel in Sean McVay’s offense.

Not to mention, Simpson is afforded the time to sit and develop in Los Angeles, getting a chance to learn from a likely future Hall of Famer in Matthew Stafford. That’s not something he would’ve gotten anywhere else – certainly not with the Jets or Cardinals, who were seen as his other suitors.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen loves Simpson’s fit with the Rams, naming the pairing as one of the 15 best of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Why he fits: The Rams' QB room -- and Sean McVay's system -- are both positives for Simpson. With Matthew Stafford returning as the No. 1, Simpson will have time to develop in an offense that fits his throwing style and mobility.

Simpson is a mechanically sound passer who can make the NFL-level throws. Plus, he can work the edges on boot and play-action. McVay will ask him to showcase that latter, as Stafford led the NFL with 75 attempts on designed rollouts in 2025.

Once Simpson gets his chance to start, look for McVay to give him more defined reads and movement concepts. He'll be put in a position to see the entire field and deliver the ball on time.

Though a number of backups have come and gone in Los Angeles under McVay, there have only been two starters since he was hired in 2017: Jared Goff and Stafford. Simpson hopes to be next in line as a future franchise icon for the Rams, being the first hand-picked quarterback by McVay in the draft – besides Stetson Bennett in the fourth round.

He brings intelligence, accuracy and mobility to the picture for the Rams, which could take McVay’s offense in a different direction from the more traditional drop-back passing game to one featuring increased roll-outs and designed quarterback runs.
