One AL contender could help the Yankees like no other team in baseball at MLB trade deadline originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees are going to be one of the many contending teams looking for pitching at the trade deadline. Whether it be in the starting rotation or the bullpen, most contending teams never feel content with what they have on the mound, and rightfully so.
Pitching wins games at the highest level in October, so the Yankees are going to have to be heavily in the mix for some of the top guys available. Certain teams in baseball can definitely help the Yankees with that more often than not, including the Kansas City Royals.
Bleacher Report recently listed potential trade candidates for Kansas City, and nearly all of them could help the Yankees.
“If Kansas City were to sell, president of baseball operations J. J. Picollo has plenty of pitchers teams would have interest in,” Tim Kelly of BR wrote.
“Lucas Erceg could be a set-up man or closer for a contender. Veteran reliever Matt Strahm is a left-hander on an expiring contract. What about productive veteran starters signed beyond 2026, like Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha?”
One guy in particular I'd love the Yankees to go out and get is left-hander Matt Strahm.
Strahm has proven throughout his career that he can get outs at a very high level, and if it's possible, the Yankees should look to make a play for somebody like Lucas Erceg, as both relievers would be a big help to what New York is trying to build in its bullpen.
Neither players price should be relatively high compared to others on the market, too, so they could be two under-the-radar guys to go after right now.
