Here's everything we know about Chargers running back Omarion Hampton's status for the playoff game against the Patriots on Sunday night.
Hampton did not participate in practice on Wednesday and Thursday due to a right ankle injury that he sustained in the Week 17 loss to the Texans. However, he returned as a limited participant on Friday, marking his first on-field work since Week 17. He was spotted at practice with a big brace on the ankle.
After missing the first two practices, Hampton was officially listed as questionable for Sunday night's game due to the ankle. He told reporters his plan is to play. Barring a setback during travel or pregame warmups, expect him to be available.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh noted earlier in the week that Hampton was "doing everything and anything he can to get back as fast as he can." Offensive coordinator Greg Roman added that Hampton was "working through his process with the medical group engaged and ready mentally with the game plan." On Friday, Harbaugh said that Hampton is "progressing."
If Hampton can't go or is limited heavily, Kimani Vidal would step up as the lead back. Depth would include Hassan Haskins and Jaret Patterson or practice squad promotions. The Chargers would likely split carries, but Vidal would shoulder the primary workload in Hampton's absence.
