Blink, and you just might miss all the short track speed skating events at this year's Winter Olympics.
Not to be confused with traditional speed skating, short track varies by rules, format and event equipment. Short track sees skaters compete against each other directly, not just against the clock, and the tight quarters invariably lead to contact and wipeouts that can dash medal hopes in an instant.
The competition was first introduced in 1988 Games as a demonstration sport, and South Korea, China and Canada traditionally dominate this discipline.
South Korea leads the medal count with 53 medals (26 gold), including five at the 2022 Olympics. It's not the USA's strongest event, as it only has 20 medals in the sport, but it's anyone's race.

Short track speed skating at Milan Cortina 2026 will air across NBC and USA Network. Red Robinson will lead the broadcast team as the play-by-play announcer. Katherine Reutter-Adamek (analyst) and Andrea Joyce (reporter) will join.

Olympics short track speed skating venue 2026
- Venue: Milano Ice Skating Arena
Short track speed skating and figure skating competitions at the 2026 Winter Olympics will take place at the Milano Ice Skating Arena.
The track in Milan was converted inside the Unipol Forum in Assago, one of Europe's top facilities with a renowned skating school. Rather than a temporary rink, the Milano Ice Skating Arena utilizes a permanent rink for short track and figure skating events.
