A speedskating event at the Milan Cortina Olympics was interrupted by a bloody accident Friday.

Polish skater Kamila Sellier was taken off the ice on a stretcher after a blade from a competitor's skate sliced her face above the left eye in a sudden crash.

About 1 minute and 40 seconds into their quarterfinal race in the 1500m short track, American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold passed Sellier, knocking the Polish skater off balance as her right skate grazed Sellier's face. As Sellier fell, she collided with Italy's Ariana Fontana.

Referees paused the race around 13 seconds after the accident, and medical personnel assisted Sellier on the ice as officials held a white sheet to block the skater from the crowd at the Milano Ice Skating Arena.

Sellier eventually gave a thumbs-up and was escorted off the ice in a stretcher. The Associated Press reported that she received stitches while still on the ice, and was later taken to a hospital for further examination. Polish officials said that Sellier's eye was fine after the incident.

The skater's blood had to be cleaned off the ice before the race could continue.

Officials also deemed Santos-Griswold's pass illegal, which prevented the American skater from advancing to the semifinal round.

Fontana ultimately placed second once the race resumed, and she went on to place fifth in the final race of the event.

The event ended with South Korea's Kim Gilli winning gold and fellow South Korean skater Choi Minjeong taking silver, while U.S. skater Corinne Stoddard took home the bronze.

The Milan games marked Sellier's first Olympics. The skater did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment.
