Polish speed skater Kamila Sellier has undergone successful surgery after being hit by a blade of a rival in the face during a crash in the Olympic 1,500 metres short track competition.
Team official Konrad Niedzwiedzki told Eurosport that "Kamila underwent surgery to put the damaged bone visible in a scan back together and to clean everything."
He said that swellings remain and that Sellier will undergo further examinations of the eyeball in hospital, adding it was unclear when she will be discharged.
Sellier, 25, fell during Friday's quarter-finals and while sliding across the ice was inadvertently hit by the blade of American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold under her left eye.
The race was immediately stopped and Sellier shielded from the crowd by a while sheet as she received treatment. She was stretchered off the ice, giving a thumbs-up sign in the process. Team officials said she received stitches and was then taken to hospital.
"Since it is a cut on the face that has been stitched up with several stitches and the area has a strong blood supply, we must be patient. This also applies to Kamila," Niedzwiedzki said.
