For the second time this season, a Beaver Valley high school football athlete is the recipient of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Jerome Bettis Leadership Award, as OLSH sophomore linebacker Kassius Gildon was named the Week 7 honoree.
Outside of being one of the key pieces on OLSH’s defense and his work in the classroom, Gildon volunteers at the Allegheny Center Alliance Church and the Jasime Nyree Foundation. Along with volunteering, Gildon served on a mission trip to Indianapolis over the summer.
The Jerome Bettis Leadership Award was created to feature high school football players from around the WPIAL who provide mentorship to teammates, their community and grow both on and off the field.
Every year, 11 football and 7 girls flag football athletes receive the award. Each recipient receives an on-field celebration at a Steelers home game, a $1,000 donation to the school’s football program and is recognized on the Steelers' social media channels.
Gildon is the third player from OLSH to receive the award, with former running back and linebacker Dior Devers becoming the first Charger to win it back in 2022 and OLSH flag football wide receiver and defensive back Margaret Mary Sweeney receiving it in 2024.

Earlier this season, Aliquippa senior quarterback Marques Council garnered the award, mentoring younger students and athletes in the Aliquippa community, all while leading the offense on the field.
Before this season, seven other Beaver Valley athletes have received the honor since 2022.
