Another dominant first half carried No. 7 Ole Miss to a big win in the 2026 SEC Tournament. This time, however, it was against the No. 5 team in the country.
Behind another gritty first-quarter defensive effort, the Rebels jumped out to a 49-17 halftime lead and defeated No. 2 seed Vanderbilt 89-78 win over in Friday night’s quarterfinals in Greenville, South Carolina. Ole Miss advances to Saturday’s tournament semifinals against either No. 3 seed Texas or No. 11 seed Alabama.
The Rebels, who also defeated the Commodores 83-75 in their regular-season matchup in late January, shot 57.1% from the field overall and led for more than 39 minutes. Vanderbilt outscored Ole Miss 61-40 in the second half but never got the deficit into single digits. Senior forwards Latasha Lattimore and Cotie McMahon scored 28 points and 27 points, respectively.
Following a 16-point win over No. 15 seed Auburn on Thursday night where they held the Tigers to 6 first-quarter points, the Rebels (23-10) jumped out to a 25-6 lead after one quarter Friday, with Vanderbilt (27-4) missing 16 of its 18 shots from the field. Sophomore guard Tianna Thompson scored 10 points for Ole Miss in the period. She finished with 16.
The Rebels used a 10-0 run to take a 24-point lead less than four minutes into the second quarter and led by 32 points at halftime. The Commodores, who entered the game ninth nationally in scoring at 84.9 points per game and 15th in field-goal percentage at 47.2% shooting, scored just 17 points in the first half on 17% from the field. Mikayla Blakes, the nation’s leading scorer at better than 27 points per game, was held to one point and committed three fouls in the first half.
Vanderbilt chipped into the lead in the third, outscoring the Rebels 24-16 while shooting 56.3% from the field. Behind 13 fourth-quarter points from Blake, the Commodores trimmed the lead down to 11 four times in the game’s final three-plus minutes. The Rebels made 4 of 5 shots to end the game.
Ole Miss plays either No. 3 seed Texas or No. 11 seed Alabama in the SEC Tournament semifinals Saturday at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
