OXFORD — The details for the Archie Manning statue that is coming to the Ole Miss campus have been announced.
The statue will be placed outside of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Ole Miss announced Aug. 10 in a press release. An Ole Miss spokesperson told the Clarion Ledger that the statue will be ready for the 2027 football season.
The statue will be placed south of the football stadium and north of the Olivia and Archie Manning Athletics Performance Center.
Ole Miss is working in partnership with Kim Sessums, a sculptor who is based in Brookhaven. Sessums did the sculpture of Ole Miss football coach Johnny Vaught that is by the Walk of Champions and the Coolidge Ball statue outside of the Sandy and John Black Pavilion.
He also sculpted the Howell Trophy, given to the top men's college basketball player each year in Mississippi, and the Gillom Trophy that is awarded to the top women's college basketball player in the state each year.
Manning, 77, is a revered figure in football and is beloved in Oxford. He was the star quarterback for Ole Miss from 1968-70 under Vaught. Manning also played baseball at Ole Miss.
Manning racked up 5,576 yards of total offense and had a school-record 56 touchdowns at Ole Miss. He finished third in Heisman Trophy voting in 1970 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
Manning played for the New Orleans Saints in the NFL after being picked No. 2 overall in the 1971 NFL Draft. He is the father of NFL greats Peyton and Eli Manning.
Eli played at Ole Miss from 2000-03 and was third in Heisman Trophy voting in 2003.
Speed limit signs are posted at 18 miles per hour on the Ole Miss campus in honor of Archie and Eli, who both wore No. 18 in their time as the quarterback for the Rebels.
Manning is the second Ole Miss football player to be honored with a statue. Chucky Mullins has a movable bust that is prominently featured on football game days in the Ole Miss tunnel. Mullins was paralyzed in a 1989 game and died in 1991 due to complications from the injury.
Vaught, Ball and Tim Elko are other Ole Miss athletic statues on campus.
Vaught is Ole Miss' winningest football coach with 190 victories, and his statue was dedicated in 2008.
Ball was the first Black athlete at Ole Miss, playing basketball from 1971-74. His statue was unveiled in 2021.
Elko was a star player on the 2022 Ole Miss baseball team that won the College World Series. Elko's statue was unveiled in 2024.
