The Oklahoma Sooners are replacing R Mason Thomas at the defensive end position this season, as they bid farewell to their senior star pass-rusher to the NFL, where he may become a first-round draft pick.
One player who can step into Thomas' role is defensive lineman Adepoju Adebawore, who is entering his fourth season with the program. He'll be competing to become a starter opposite Taylor Wein at DE, but it looks like he'll be behind the eight-ball to start spring football.
Speaking to the media on Monday, head coach Brent Venables announced that Adebawore underwent offseason surgery on his foot after the 2025 season.
"He had to have offseason foot surgery from last year, wear and tear," Venables said.
Adebawore's main competition at defensive end will be Danny Okoye, who could very well end up as the starter with Adebawore still recovering. UTSA transfer Kenny Ozowalu and true freshman Jake Kreul will look to impress coaches this spring as well.
Venables also noted that there were quite a few injuries that lingered into the postseason and required surgeries; all part of the normal wear and tear of college football.
"We've got several, just offseason, postseason surgeries," Venables said. "Even some of the new guys coming in that we knew as we signed them that there's going to be little nicks and knacks. This is the time of the year to get healthy and so we're going to do that."
Adebawore entered the transfer portal for a matter of minutes back in January, but he withdrew his name and returned to Oklahoma. The Sooners wanted to keep Adebawore on board, as he'll be a big part of the defensive front this season. He joined wide receiver Ivan Carreon as the two players to hit the portal, but then withdraw and return to Norman.
