Oklahoma announced a couple of tweaks to its 2027 football schedule on Wednesday. The Sooners will open the season at home against Utah State on Aug. 28, and the previously scheduled game against SMU at AT&T Stadium in Arlington has been moved up a week to Sept. 4.
The Utah State game gives Oklahoma a familiar early-season home opponent. The two programs have met five times before, all in Norman, and the Sooners have won every one of them. The scores have generally been lopsided: 49-0 in 1972, 72-3 in 1974, 55-21 in 1991, 54-3 in 2007, and a closer 31-24 decision in 2010. It should serve as a solid opener while the new season gets going.
Moving the SMU game to Sept. 4 keeps the Sooners in the Dallas area early in the year. AT&T Stadium has been a good spot for Oklahoma over the years. The Sooners are 6-2 all-time in Arlington, including a perfect 5-0 mark in Big 12 Championship games. They’ve won their last five trips to the venue overall.
This will be the second meeting of a home-and-home series with SMU. Oklahoma won the first one 28-11 in Norman back in 2023. The Sooners lead the all-time series 6-1-1. Playing at a neutral-ish site in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex should draw a solid crowd of fans from both sides and give Oklahoma another early measuring stick before SEC play ramps up.
These kinds of schedule adjustments are pretty common as future years get locked in. Opening at home against a Group of Six opponent like Utah State gives the team a chance to work through early rust in front of the home crowd. Shifting SMU up a week creates a slightly different early rhythm but keeps a Power conference-level opponent on the non-conference slate.
For fans, the Aug. 28 home opener against Utah State will be the first chance to see the 2027 version of the Sooners in person. Then it’s a quick turnaround to Arlington the following week for SMU.
