Ohio State football head coach Ryan Day has apparently honed in on the successor for Brian Hartline at the offensive coordinator position. According to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Buckeyes are in talks to finalize a deal with former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
Smith called the plays for the Pittsburgh offense under head coach Mike Tomlin from 2024 up until this season. His future with the Steelers is uncertain with Tomlin stepping down at the end of this season, but he more than likely would be out of work with a new coaching staff coming in. Prior to his time in the Steel City, Smith was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2021 to 2023. Smith also spent several seasons with the Tennessee Titans, eventually working his way up to offensive coordinator there.
This hire fits right in line with what Day has continued to do in filling his job openings: hire from the NFL ranks. He did it with Chip Kelly, with Matt Patricia for the defensive coordinator position, and now with Smith.
We'll have more on this as more news becomes available and as Ohio State confirms the move, but for now, it looks like the search may be coming to an end.
