Ohio State fans can breathe a sigh of relief as a big part of their future has committed to stay in Columbus for another year.

Amare Bynum said on social media that he will return to Ohio State for next season, giving the Buckeyes a young frontcourt piece back after a freshman year that showed tremendous upside. Bynum, a 6-foot-8 forward from Omaha, Nebraska, averaged 9.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists this season while shooting 50.6% from the field.

Ohio State finished 21-13 overall, went 12-8 in Big Ten play, and placed eighth in the conference before losing 66-64 to TCU in the NCAA Tournament’s first round. The Buckeyes showed flashes of consistency, but ultimately, multiple single-possession losses to teams like Pittsburgh, North Carolina, and Nebraska kept the year from becoming a consensus "success."

It was reported by Joe Tipton of On3 that Bynum's teammate, Devin Royal, would be entering the transfer portal, and if Bynum was going to follow in Royal's path, it could have caused a chaotic reaction by the Buckeyes' fanbase. But Bynum’s return should give Ohio State a reliable returning contributor as it tries to build on a season that ended with missed opportunities. His size, rebounding, and improving scoring touch made him one of the Buckeyes’ more encouraging pieces this year, and his decision to come back gives the program an early boost heading into next season.
