After impressive girls basketball coaching stints at Marysville and Olentangy, Klarke Ransome is looking forward to a step up in competition.

Ransome, 34, has been named women’s basketball coach at Division II Ohio Dominican. He succeeds Brianna Sims, who stepped down after two seasons to accept the same position at Findlay.

“I’m sure there’s going to be some differences,” Ransome said of coaching at the collegiate level. “I’m going to have to learn on the job. I feel very confident in how we build a program and what we’ve done culture-wise in getting kids to buy in. I’m very passionate. We have high standards. We have high expectations. Those are some of the non-negotiable things that we’ve preached. Those won’t change.”

Ransome has also stepped down as an adapted physical education teacher in Olentangy Local Schools. His new job is a full-time position.

Olentangy went 22-4, won the OCC-Cardinal title and reached a Division I regional final in each of Ransome’s two seasons. Its top player, Kent State signee Whitney Stafford, graduated as Olentangy’s all-time leading scorer for boys and girls basketball.

“I was blessed to be a part of the Olentangy community for a couple of years,” Ransome said. “I have nothing but wonderful things to say about all the people and the players and the students over there. They were incredible. I obviously loved my time there. Everything happens for a reason. I wouldn’t trade the last two years for anything.”

Ransome also guided Marysville to a Division I regional runner-up finish in 2023 and three OCC championships. He went 131-25 in his six seasons at the prep level.

“Klarke’s coaching success and experience in central Ohio and his commitment to building a strong student-athlete experience for our program enabled him to be a strong fit for our department,” ODU athletic director Jeff Blair said.

A member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, the Panthers went 14-14 last season.

Ransome, a 2010 graduate of North Union and 2014 graduate of Wilmington College, also applied for the ODU position in 2024.

He and his wife, Sydney, have two children, ages 1 and 3. Sydney is an occupational therapist at Olentangy’s Cheshire Elementary School.

“We thought about this for a few years,” Ransome said. “It was a goal. I have a family to think about, so it would have to be something that worked out, and ODU is obviously a perfect fit in terms of family. We don’t have to move. ... Nothing really changes other than the fact I get a great opportunity at a great university to try and set a standard and a culture there.”
