Chelsea have found our new head coach and have swiftly moved through the process of hiring him, getting everything done and dusted even before the official end of the 2025-26 season. Granted, our season effectively ended with Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat, consigning us (most probably) to no European football next season, but we’ve followed that disappointment with the promise of this announcement. Summer is the time of hope, and we can now start building some for next season.

Xabi Alonso thus becomes the latest manager to try to coexist within the BlueCo structure. He joins on a (just) a 4-year contract, but with supposedly a lot more say and influence in footballing matters. Notably, his official title will be “manager” rather than “head coach”. His official start date is July 1, but he will presumably start to get involved well before then.

How all that might look in practice remains to be seen, but in theory, he’s the right appointment with the right intentions from all concerned. The BlueCo experiment has not been a success over the past four years; Alonso’s appointment in some ways signifies an acknowledgement of that, and carries with it the notion that we’ll do things a bit differently going forward.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club.

“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.

‘There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.“
