New York Knicks fans will get a chance to gather outside Madison Square Garden again for Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
The decision comes after a tense back-and-forth over crowd control outside the arena. The Knicks’ run has created huge energy in the city, but officials had already shown concern about how rowdy those gatherings had become.
That is why the reversal matters. On the night New York opens the Finals against San Antonio, the party outside the Garden is back on.

NYPD lifts Madison Square Garden watch-party ban for New York Knicks vs San Antonio Spurs Game 1
In a recent Ian Begley X post, the update around the Knicks’ outdoor watch-party situation was revealed before Game 1.
“The NYPD ban on Knicks watch parties directly outside Madison Square Garden has been lifted for tonight. The NYPD had previously banned watch parties in Plaza 33 during the ECF.
“But they’ve reversed the decision for Game 1 on Wednesday night,” Begley reported.
The shift gives Knicks fans another public gathering point as the franchise opens the Finals against the Spurs. The previous ban came during the Eastern Conference Finals, when officials decided not to support more watch parties outside MSG because crowds had become too large and rowdy.
For New York, the timing is huge. The Knicks are back in the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years, and the city is treating the moment like more than just another playoff game.
New York Knicks Plaza 33 party returns for San Antonio Spurs NBA Finals opener
The permit situation was also clarified, with MSG getting approval for the Game 1 gathering outside the arena.
“An MSG spokesperson confirmed that the Garden has applied for permits to host the Plaza 33 party tonight and those permits have been granted. The permit is solely for tonight’s Game 1,” Begley continued.
“Status for future watch parties is TBD. The NYPD previously banned the watch parties outside MSG during the ECF against the Cavaliers for being too rowdy,” he concluded.
That means the return is not automatically permanent. The city is allowing the Plaza 33 watch party for Game 1, but future gatherings will depend on how officials handle crowd safety after Wednesday night.
The matchup gives the night even more weight. New York enters the Finals behind Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and a deep playoff group, while San Antonio brings Victor Wembanyama into one of the biggest stages of his career.
The Knicks are trying to win their first championship since 1973, and the Spurs are trying to start another era around Wembanyama. For one night, at least, fans outside MSG will be allowed to make that moment feel as loud as it should.
