Outdoor Knicks watch parties have been a major part of the 2026 NBA playoffs. Before Game 3, the NYPD had already made 26 arrests and reported one injured officer during the Game 2 watch party outside MSG.

Due to President Trump’s attendance and enhanced security, the Knicks canceled all official watch parties outside MSG for Game 3. Fans were redirected to alternative locations, including Bryant Park, just seven blocks away.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Bryant Park as the primary replacement watch party location on the morning of June 8. The event was free, open to the public, and capped at 5,000 registered attendees. Two additional watch parties were established at Wollman Rink in Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl. Fans who had hoped to gather outside MSG found themselves redirected because of the Secret Service perimeter established for the president’s visit.

As the Spurs pulled away in the fourth quarter, chaos erupted at Bryant Park. A widely circulated video on June 9 showed fights breaking out, with NYPD officers deploying pepper spray to disperse the crowd. Fans were also seen climbing police vehicles and scaffolding outside the park’s perimeter.

NYPD arrested seven people in total, six for disorderly conduct and one for assaulting an officer. Before the chaos, one attendee had told ABC7 the atmosphere was positive. “I think it’s pretty cool, actually. Everyone’s still out here having fun,” the fan said. “It’s lit, it’s lit.” That tone did not last.

This was not the first incident. Knicks outdoor watch parties have seen multiple disturbances throughout the 2026 postseason. Game 1 celebrations led to arrests and ambulance damage. Game 2 saw 26 arrests and an injured NYPD officer outside MSG. Game 3 at Bryant Park extended that pattern to a third consecutive round of crowd enforcement.

ABC7 reported that the registered event inside Bryant Park itself was largely controlled, with fans watching the game on a large screen on the lawn. While the registered event inside Bryant Park remained relatively controlled, violence broke out on the surrounding streets (42nd and 40th Streets). Unregistered fans climbed barricades and scaffolding to watch the game, leading to confrontations with police.

The Knicks lost 115-111, with De’Aaron Fox hitting the decisive shot in the final possession. It was New York’s first loss of the entire 2026 postseason, snapping a 13-game playoff win streak. Jalen Brunson scored 32 points in the defeat, and OG Anunoby added 28. Victor Wembanyama finished with 32 points and 12 rebounds for San Antonio, his best showing of the series. The Knicks still lead the series 2-1 heading into Game 4.

What NYPD Faces Ahead of Game 4 Watch Parties at MSG

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that watch parties outside MSG will resume for Game 4 on Wednesday. That decision now carries real weight given the Bryant Park outcome.

Officials said similar security measures will remain in place, though Trump is not confirmed to attend Game 4, which could ease the perimeter restrictions that pushed fans away from MSG in the first place.

The three-game arc of crowd incidents tells a clear story. The NYPD and Secret Service jointly decided to relocate Game 3 watch parties after determining the presidential security requirements made the MSG location unmanageable. That decision displaced thousands of fans and contributed directly to the scattered crowd conditions that allowed the Bryant Park situation to develop.
