A group of unruly Knicks fans upset at their team’s Finals Game 3 loss on Monday pummeled a San Antonio Spurs fan and stole the Tim Duncan jersey off his back during a wild attack in Midtown Manhattan, cops said.
Police on Wednesday released surveillance images of the suspects they say attacked the 39-year-old Spurs fan and asked the public’s help identifying them and tracking them down.
The attack unfolded as police made 21 arrests of Knicks fans who went wild at a watch party at Bryant Park, blocking traffic on W. 42nd St., ripping trees out of the ground and injuring at least two NYPD cops.
The victim was walking back to his hotel about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday after Game 3 of the NBA Finals when a group of young men surrounded him.
Some of the men were wearing Knicks attire. At least one was wearing a New York Islanders jersey, the pictures released by the NYPD show.
The group beat and kicked the victim as they yanked his Spurs #21 jersey off him and ran off with it, cops said.
Number 21 was worn by Tim Duncan, a power forward who played with the Spurs from 1997 to his retirement in 2016.
The Spurs fan was taken to Mount Sinai West with minor injuries.
Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
The robbery comes as City Hall and the NYPD prepare for Game 4 of the NBA Finals Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. Mayor Mamdani has authorized a ticketed watch party outside MSG but warned against any property destruction or violence.
“As we prepare to watch together, let me be clear: this is a historic, joyful moment for our city,” Mamdani said on X. “We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence. Be safe, take care, and celebrate responsibly.”
“Knicks in 5,” he added.
The NYPD said a secure zone will be established around MSG beginning at 4:30 p.m. Fans with tickets to watch either the game inside or the watch party outside will be allowed in.
The frozen zone will run from W. 29th to W. 35th Sts. between Sixth and Eighth Aves. “Unless you are going to the game, restaurant or bar, or traveling through the train station, you should avoid this area,” the NYPD said in a statement.
