CINCINNATI — The Mets are turning to Nolan McLean to try and help them overcome a pair of rough results in their opening two games against the Reds.
In a pair of defeats to open the series, Tobias Myers and Kodai Senga gave up a combined seven runs in the first inning.
McLean will be on the mound to try and play the role of stopper for the Mets in their series finale against the Reds at 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.
"I think it just comes down to him commanding the baseball and throwing strikes," Carlos Mendoza said.
The Mets rookie right-hander struggled on that front last time out. He only lasted four innings after issuing four walks and giving up two hits despite limiting the damage to two earned runs. McLean has only completed six innings once in his last five starts.
For the Mets offense to help avoid a sweep, they will need to cash in on their run-scoring opportunities. They have left 23 runners on base and gone 3-for-23 with runners in scoring position in the first two games.
Nick Lodolo has been up and down since making his season debut in early May after missing the first month with a blister on his index finger. The Reds left-hander is 2-1 with a 5.21 ERA and 1.45 WHIP this season.
