The Mets finally have their designated hitter back.
Jorge Polanco was reinstated from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday afternoon. He has been out since April 14 with Achilles bursitis and a right wrist contusion.
The switch-hitting Polanco is back in the lineup, batting sixth behind Carson Benge.
In a corresponding move, the Mets optioned Ronny Mauricio to Triple-A Syracuse. They also designed Guillermo Zuñiga and Alex Carrillo for assignment.
The Mets are hoping to carry some momentum back home after plenty of twists and turns over the last two days. They managed to take the final two games of their series against the Braves.
After a frenetic 11-run ninth inning on Sunday saw the Mets hold on for a one-run win, they used a Juan Soto go-ahead home run and Luis Torrens two-run double to take down the Braves in extra innings on Monday.
Now, the Mets will go for a third straight win as they open a three-game series with the Royals at 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday night at Citi FIeld.
The Mets enter the contest with a 38-53 record, second-worst in the National League, while the Royals (37-54) have the second-worst mark in the American League.
The Mets will be facing a familiar face as Seth Lugo takes the ball for the Royals in the series opener.
The former Mets reliever, who has been a starter since his departure following the 2022 season, is in his third season with the Royals. Lugo has made 17 starts this season, notching a 3-6 record with a 4.20 ERA and 1.38 WHIP.
The Mets are likely to go with Kodai Senga as a bulk arm behind opener Cionel Perez. The club added Matt Seelinger to the 40-man roster for an additional relief option.
In his last two relief appearances since being moved from the starting rotation, Senga has allowed three combined earned runs in 7⅔ innings.
