The National Women;’s Soccer League released an updated list of competition rule changes for the 2026 season including an updated salary cap, the introduction of the High Impact Player rule and major changes to the way goalkeeper injuries are handled.

On the salary cap front per the latest collective bargaining agreement between the NWSL and the NWSL Player’s Association the league will raise the salary cap threshold to $3.7 million and the net transfer fee threshold $605,000.

The NWSL is also set to implement the High Impact Player rule, “Rodman rule,” which was implemented to attract and keep top stars from around the world in the NWSL by extending salary cap thresholds for players that meet special criteria outlined by the NWSL.

The NWSLPA filed a grievance against the league for the implementation of the HIP rule calling for the rescission of the rule immediately saying that changes to compensation should be bargained. Arbitration between the two sides is expected over this issue and a previous grievance regarding the denial of Trinity Rodman’s previous contract agreement with the Washington Spirit.

One of the most interesting developments was the new protocol during in-game goalkeeper injuries. In the past and often in the 2025 NWSL season during a stoppage in play a goalkeeper would seemingly pretend to go down with an injury giving time for both teams to take a break to hydrate and receive instructions from their technical staff.

The official guidelines state: “Players must either remain in the area they were located when play was stopped, or may congregate on their team’s side of the midfield center circle. In the event of a team’s players approaching the technical area during a stoppage for a goalkeeper injury, the respective team and/or its head coach may be subject to league discipline.”

The only exception to the rule would be if goalkeepers are actually substituted off in the match which would then allow teams to approach their respective technical areas to receive instructions.

The league included an updated minimum bonus list that will be awarded to players who experience team success or individual accolades at the end of the 2026 season which are listed here:

NWSL Shield Winners: $15,000

NWSL Champions: $15,000

Playoff bonuses:

  • Quarterfinalists: $3,750
  • Semifinalists: $7,500
  • Finalists: $11,250

Challenge Cup:

  • Champion: $3,500
  • Runner-up: $2,200

Individual Award Bonuses

  • Most Valuable Player: $25,000
  • Rookie of the Year: $20,000
  • Best XI: $10,000
  • Championship MVP: $10,000
  • Goalkeeper of the Year: $10,000

  • Midfielder of the Year: $10,000

Minor changes to the ways in which referees interact with the game will include expanded use of the RefCam. The RefCam features a first-person view of the match to be used in the broadcast, and used as a training tool for Professional Referee Organization. The referees will also introduce stadium-wide VAR announcements allowing the referee to communicate VAR decisions to fans in the stadium and on the broadcast.
