Notre Dame men's lacrosse will not be taking home its third national championship in a row.

The Fighting Irish fell short of the three-peat by losing to Penn State in an NCAA men's lacrosse tournament quarterfinal matchup 14-12.

Notre Dame was unable to hold onto a six-goal lead, in part because the Irish couldn't find the net in the final 21 minutes of the game, which was held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Irish had an 8-3 halftime lead and a 12-6 lead in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough. Matt Traynor had six goals and an assist for the Nittany Lions.

Chris Kavanagh and Devon McLane both had three goals and two assists apiece for the Irish, with Kavanagh scoring the Irish's final goal.

This was the first time Notre Dame ever faced Penn State in the postseason and the first matchup against the Nittany Lions since 2014.

Despite the season-ending loss, the Irish are still 15-7 against Penn State all-time.
