After this first year of the 12-team College Football Playoff, you had to know changes were coming, and on Thursday it was announced that the seeding rumors were true.
The committee will now have straight seeding according to Yahoo Sports Ross Dellenger, no longer favoring conference champions and them getting a bye, instead going with the top four teams having the first-round off. This makes a big impact for Notre Dame, as they were unable to get a bye this past year due to no conference affiliation.
It would not have mattered much this past season, as the Irish were ranked as the No. 5 team, and would have had to play Clemson instead of Indiana. It’s hard to say how that game would have gone, but you have to believe that Notre Dame would have defeated the Tigers. They would have played Penn State a round earlier, and we all know how that one turned out.
Oregon would have been the top team on that side of the bracket, as their road to the semifinals would have been much easier facing either the Hoosiers or Boise State in the second-round.
While that is all hypothetical, what isn’t is now the Irish can qualify for a bye, and while every team this past season lost with it, it’s still great to now have that possibility. It takes some of the grind off of the season, giving an extra week or so of rest. While it was great to see Notre Dame playing at night against Indiana, it now has the ability to get a top-4 seed and watch the first-round.

Notre Dame can get a first-round bye now if it’s ranked in the top four. No longer exclusive to conference champions. https://t.co/VI3lsVc9lb
