Architect Kris Spence has been hired by the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst to oversee a $2 million renovation of the club’s practice facilities. The facilities closed June 8, and the project should take eight to 10 weeks under the supervision of Spence’s lead associate, Jim Harbin.

Spence is the club’s architect of record and completed a renovation of the club’s Dogwood Course in 2016. That course was then the site of the 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur, won by Nick Dunlap. The Dogwood ranks No. 15 on Golfweek's Best list of top private courses in North Carolina.

“The main focus is on the safety and functionality aspects of the range,” Spence said in a media release announcing the project. “We are trying to address infrastructure items on it, including agronomy, and we were listening to their problems. We are not going out to design a certain motif, except on the short-game green.”

Spence will focus on two main revisions to address problems with the range: The practice tee was not aligned to the center of the range, and the main practice area was sloped upward from back to front. Spence will change the practice tee from two decks to one larger tee, and it will tilt at 1 percent from back to front to help lower the trajectory of shots. The new single deck will be 125,000 square feet, or nearly three acres, with a portion of zoysia grass to match the Dogwood Course and a portion of Bermuda grass to match the club’s Cardinal Course. The range will feature four large target greens and two smaller greens for wedge practice.

The short-game area’s practice green also will be rebuilt with adjacent bunkers, and the entire short-game area will be enlarged by 80 percent. The safety net will be raised in key locations, and the entire area will be sodded with fresh grass.

“Like many private clubs, we have seen a significant increase in both usage and time spent at our practice facilities, and we expect that trend to continue in the years ahead,” club COO and general manager Jim Sutton said in the media release. “This capital investment will greatly enhance the practice experience for our members and provide lasting benefits for the club."
