Los Angeles Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel will miss a second consecutive game after suffering a calf injury against the Texas Rangers on Saturday.

Schanuel left the game Saturday after trying to stop an errant throw from shortstop Zach Neto. He said he has been dealing with calf tightness since he first hurt his ankle earlier in the season.

“It’s something I’ve been dealing with throughout the year and started to feel really good, and I think just one one play kind of like set it off a little bit,” Schanuel said. “I wouldn’t say like anything drastic. It just kind of flared up.”

While the issue is severe enough to keep him out of the lineup for a couple of days, neither Schanuel nor manager Kurt Suzuki deem it necessary.

“I think if I’m able to play through it and it’s bearable, then I’m going to play,” Schanuel said.

“I don’t think it’s that bad,” Suzuki said. “I don’t think it’s at that point. The staff’s been doing a good job of maintaining it. He actually said it was starting to feel better.”

Schanuel has played 49 games for the Halos this season, and has been one of their better offensive players over the course of the year. He has four homers and 24 RBIs this season, and is slashing .262/.313/.387 for an even .700 OPS.

Who Will Play Instead of Nolan Schanuel?

Vaughn Grissom has taken over as the Angels’ first baseman in Schanuel’s absence, though he hasn’t produced at all since stepping in. In his five at-bats since Schanuel went down, Grissom is 0-for-5 with a strikeout. On the season, he has a .214/.295/.337 slash line.

The Angels also have Oswald Peraza in their ranks, who played at first base from time to time after arriving in Los Angeles last season. He made 17 appearances at the position, logging 108.2 innings.

The Angels will hope Schanuel can make his return soon, as they look to carry the momentum of a three-game win streak into the remainder of the season. They currently sit last in the AL West, seven games back of the first-place Athletics.
