The Los Angeles Angels placed Nolan Schanuel on the 10-day injured list with an ankle injury after missing the last two games.

Schanuel left Saturday’s win against the Texas Rangers early after trying to stop a wild throw to first, and later said he had dealt with tightness in his calf since injuring his ankle earlier in the season.

Both manager Kurt Suzuki and Schanuel thought the first baseman would be able to return to the team without a stint on the injured list, but that is evidently not the case.

“I don’t think it’s that bad,” Suzuki said ahead of Tuesday’s game. “I don’t think it’s at that point. The staff’s been doing a good job of maintaining it. He actually said it was starting to feel better.”

In a corresponding move, the Angels selected the contract of infielder Nick Madrigal from Triple-A Salt Lake and designated outfielder Matthew Lugo for assignment.

Schanuel has had a decent season through 49 games for the Halos this year, hitting four homers and tallying 24 RBIs. He has a .700 OPS on the season.

Who is Nick Madrigal?

Madrigal, 29, is a former first-round pick, and last featured in MLB in 2024. He signed a minors deal with the Angels ahead of spring training, and has spent the 2026 season so far with the Salt Lake Bees.

He has played 38 games in the minors this season, and has a .719 OPS through 142 at-bats. seven of his 39 hits have been for extra bases, and two of them have gone over the fence. Additionally, he has 23 RBIs on the year.

Madrigal is a career .274 hitter in MLB, and has a lifetime OPS of .667. He has hit four homers over the course of 285 MLB games, and has 77 RBIs to his name. He spent the first two seasons of his MLB career with the Chicago White Sox before moving to the Chicago Cubs in 2022.

Who is Matthew Lugo?

Lugo was one of several prospects to arrive in Anaheim when the Angels sent right-hander Luis Garcia to the Boston Red Sox in 2024, and made his MLB debut last season. He got off to a strong start, though slowed down and bounced between MLB and Triple-A throughout the season.

He had a .232/.243/.464 slash line during his time in the bigs last year.

As far as this season goes, Lugo has had an alright year in the minors. He began the season in Double-A, but made his way back to Salt Lake City after just 39 games during which he had a .788 OPS. In Triple-A, he played eight games and had a .679 OPS.
