Faith Christian girls basketball remained at No. 2 in the updated Sac-Joaquin Section Division V poll Thursday, trailing only Bret Harte (Angels Camp) ahead of a crucial league matchup at Valley Christian Academy (Roseville) tonight (Friday) at 6 p.m.
The Lions (13-1, 3-0) have won 22 straight Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League games dating back to their last two runs through league. The team’s last loss came against the same Valley Christian team it faces tonight in January of 2024.
Lauren Harris, a Long Beach State signee and the Lions’ best option offensively, is two points away from 2,900 in her illustrious four-year varsity career. The senior stands at 2,898 heading into Roseville.
Valley Christian, at 13-2 overall and 3-0 in league, sits No. 7 in Thursday’s D-IV poll – two spots ahead of Sutter girls and eight in front of Marysville. The Indians moved up two spots to the top-15 following Wednesday’s blowout win over Center. The top-15 in each division are eligible for at-large playoffs berths if not positioned in the top-3 in any league with at least six teams.
Division III
Yuba City, fresh off two straight wins in league, moved into the top-3 in the Foothill Valley League and No. 16 overall in D-III ahead of its home game tonight against D-III top-ranked Placer in Yuba City.
The Honkers last made the playoffs in 2021-22 when 1,000 point scorer Karine Dhaliwal was a junior. Dhaliwal went on to play at Butte College outside of Oroville.
Boys basketball
Division IV
Two from the area in Sutter and Marysville (13-4) represent the top-5 in Division IV on Thursday. The Huskies won three of their first four in the Golden Empire League and are positioned top-3 in the GEL ahead of a trip to Rio Linda tonight. In the division, Sutter (16-4) is a spot ahead of Marysville (13-4) at No. 4. The Indians resume Pioneer Valley League action tonight with a home bout against Oakmont (18-0), the No. 4 in D-III. It’s a battle for sole possession of first in the Pioneer Valley League with each squad sitting at 4-0. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at MHS. Oakmont is 0-3 in the MaxPreps era against Marysville, with the last two being single-digit defeats.
