Thanks in part to a 2-1 finish at the annual NorCal Classic Spring Break prep baseball tournament that finished at Bryant Field in Marysville, Yuba City High baseball vaulted up to No. 5 in Thursday’s MaxPreps weekly Sac-Joaquin Section Division III poll.
The Honkers sit (8-9, 6-3 FVL) – a game back of the top-3 in the Foothill Valley League – headed back into league action Monday at home against Del Campo in the opener of a three-game set at Winship Field (YCHS).
Yuba City capped its spring break tournament with a 10-0 win over Northern Section D-III No. 5 Lassen. Wyatt Lane had two hits and scored twice for YC.
– Wheatland (13-6, 6-2 Pioneer Valley) remained No. 5 – a spot back of Sutter – in the updated D-V rankings on Thursday. The Pirates finished the spring break tournament with a win over River Valley, 10-2 on Wednesday. Freshman Israel Cortez had three RBI on two hits against the Falcons. Wheatland is a game back of league leader Lincoln going into Monday’s home game against Orland at 4 p.m.
– River Valley (4-14, 1-11 FVL) went 2-2 this week at Winship and Bryant Field and sits a spot out of the top-15 at-large playoff threshold heading into a series with Del Campo that opens April 20.
The Falcons had wins over Yreka and Marysville – the latter a 10-9 victory where Alfonso Lopez had three hits and scored twice.
Any team not in the top-3 in any six-team league that finishes top-15 in the final MaxPreps weekly rankings will earn at-large berth into the SJS playoffs that open with play-in games on May 5, according to the section.
– Sutter (14-4, 7-4 Golden Empire) had its 11-game win streak snapped Wednesday when Dixon scored in the top of the eighth to eclipse the Huskies in eight, 3-2. It was the first loss for Sutter since March 13 at Woodland. Stewart Peterson’s team is third in the Golden Empire and No. 4 in the section D-V rankings headed into a week that opens with Rio Linda on Monday and includes a date with old foe Bradshaw Christian, No. 4 in Thursday’s section D-IV poll put together by MaxPreps.
Sutter and BC met back-to-back in the Sac-Joaquin divisional finals, with Sutter winning in 2023 and BC in 2024.
The Pride sit 14-3 and in first in the Sierra Valley conference.
