With no air conditioning in the middle of a March heat wave, No. 10 seed Virginia and beat No. 7 Georgia, 82-73 in overtime in a back-and-forth game at the University of Iowa’s sweltering Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
After Day 1 of the NCAA tournament produced 16 wins by higher seeds, Virginia’s win marked the first upset of the tournament. The upset knocked the number of remaining perfect brackets on Yahoo Sports from 28.4% to 0.7% of the field.
Virginia left the first quarter with a 24-16 lead but entered the fourth in a 59-56 hole. But the Cavaliers rallied to take a 68-67 lead, then got a 3-pointer off the glass from Romi Levy to tie the game at 71-71 with 1:28 remaining in regulation.
That shot ultimately sent the game to overtime, where Virginia prevailed, 82-73 for the first upset of the tournament.
Virginia maintained its composure as the temperature on the court reached as high as 83 degrees, according to the ESPN broadcast. Virginia toughed out the overtime win in difficult conditions despite having been pushed to the brink by Arizona State in a 57-55 win just two nights earlier in the First Four.

Georgia, instead, appeared more impacted by the conditions as it scored just two points in the extra session. And its tournament is done. Virginia advances to take on the winner between No. 2 Iowa and No. 15 Fairleigh Dickinson.
Kymora Johnson led the Virginia effort with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists while shooting 5 of 10 from 3. Sa'Myah Smith co-starred with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists while shooting 10 of 12 from the floor.
Virginia largely appeared unaffected by the conditions on a day where it shot 52% from the field and 48% (10 of 21) from 3.
Fatigue, meanwhile, appeared to set in for Georgia, which got zero points from its bench. Four Georgia reserves combined to play 19 minutes, but none of them scored as Bulldogs starters accounted for all 73 of their points.
Rylie Theuerkauf led the Bulldogs with 22 points and 4 assists as one of four Georgia starters to play 40-plus minutes. Georgia shot 44% from the field and 29% (7 of 24) from 3.
A Dani Carnegie layup accounted for Georgia’s only points in overtime as Virginia secured an 11-2 advantage in the extra session.
