SEYMOUR – Two Indianapolis schools, Cathedral and Roncalli, qualified for the Class 3A boys basketball semistate Saturday at Seymour High School. Only one, however, has advanced to tonight’s 8 p.m. semistate title game.

Third-ranked Cathedral dominated No. 2 Princeton 85-64 in the noon game to earn the right to play in the nightcap.

In the 10 a.m. contest, No. 1 Silver Creek topped Roncalli 67-44, setting up an intriguing Cathedral-Silver Creek matchup to determine which team advances to state.

Roncalli came out ice cold from the field. The Royals generated plenty of open looks, but shots weren’t falling.

Silver Creek got going early through senior Dane Caldwell. The versatile 6-10 senior didn’t just do damage in the paint, he also showed off his slashing and ball-handling ability on the wing.Careless turnovers plagued Roncalli along with the shooting woes. The Royals stormed back briefly in the third quarter behind senior guard Luke Baker’s scoring spurt, but Silver Creek reasserted itself to take a 9-point lead into the fourth.

A ferocious rally in the final period saw Silver Creek’s lead balloon up to as many as 24.

Roncalli senior Joe Taylor, listed at 6-9, was entrusted with the difficult task of containing Caldwell.

“He’s a great player, can score at all three levels and he’s quick,” Taylor said. “Just got to stay in front of him and keep a hand up. Don’t let him go unguarded. Send two (defenders) if we have to.”

Stopping Caldwell proved easier said than done, as the Richmond-bound big man finished with a game-high 22 points. Kasen Daeger scored 13 for the Dragons (29-1) and Brandon Hunter added 10.

Baker and Caleb Maurer carried the scoring load for Roncalli, but the poor field goal percentage and costly turnovers saw the Royals’ season come to an end at 18-8.

In the second game, Cathedral (23-5) used its superior athleticism and scrappy defense to dominate practically from the opening tip.

A few long threes from senior guard Zen Coomer gave Princeton (23-4) a short-lived early edge. From there, Cathedral completely took over.

The Tigers simply had no answer for the Fighting Irish’s quickness, struggling at times to even get off shot attempts due to the intense perimeter defense.

Cathedral shot the ball very well throughout, making the most of its superb ball movement. Senior guard Julien Smith paced the Irish with 22 points.

“He does a lot of things,” Cathedral head coach Jason Delaney said of Smith. “He’s a veteran guy. He’s close to a 1,500-point (career) scorer. So, he has that dynamic to him. I thought he played a really great game this morning.”

Upperclassmen Braylon Pippins and Keaton Aldridge chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the Irish.

When asked how his team might game plan for Caldwell tonight, Delaney gave away no tells but offered a joke.

“Pray before we go out there,” he said.

Tonight’s matchup will feature two of the state’s top-ranked teams in Class 3A, with Silver Creek finishing the regular season ranked No. 1 and Cathedral No. 3.
