Nnamdi Madubuike has been cleared by independent spine and cervical specialists to return to the field, providing the Baltimore Ravens with their most encouraging development since the Pro Bowl defensive lineman suffered a career-threatening neck injury last season.
The Ravens placed Madubuike on the active/physically unable to perform list to begin training camp, but the designation does not represent a medical setback. According to The Athletic, Baltimore wants to give Madubuike time to reacclimate to football activities and evaluate his conditioning before clearing him for a full practice. He could return as early as next week.
That distinction is significant. Madubuike’s placement on the active/PUP list allows the Ravens to activate him at any point during training camp. The team can continue evaluating him without rushing one of its most important defensive players into full-contact work after a lengthy recovery.
Madubuike suffered the neck injury in Week 2 of the 2025 season and missed the remainder of the year. He underwent surgery in April, and doctors believed at the time that the procedure could allow him to resume his career in 2026. The Ravens acknowledged that encouraging prognosis, but his clearance represents a more definitive step toward returning.
Baltimore built its defensive front with protection against an extended absence. The Ravens retained Travis Jones and John Jenkins, brought back Calais Campbell and added depth through the draft. None of those moves could fully replace what a healthy Madubuike provides as an interior pass rusher.
The Ravens will determine how quickly Madubuike can regain his conditioning and handle contact after missing most of last season. There is no reason to accelerate that process in July. The most important news is that independent specialists have cleared him to resume playing football.
