@Cardsmasochist hi, I finally got to Costco today and picked one of these up. Figured we should do a thread here over keeping it buried in a random P&R thread. It looks like the guy in the video below that you had linked has a recipe book and videos on using it and protein drinks. I'm going to check some of them out tonight.

Any tips that you'd give on making good protein ice cream?

Congratulations on your new Creami! You’re going to love it!

A few tips:

1. Buy extra containers so you can prep 6-7 per week. It takes the same amount of time to make one as it does several so it makes sense to have the base of your favorite flavors ready for mix in’s

2. Freeze your pint overnight with the lid off to avoid the hump in the middle. The Creami blade works best on a flat surface. And the hump can damage the blade. If you still get a hump in the middle then use a tablespoon to scrape it flat

3. Let you pint thaw for 10-15 minutes before blending

4. I also like to run hot water over the sides of the pint to help it thaw (steps 3 & 4 just helps the blade do its job)

5. Find the metal thing that sticks out of the Creami. It’s what connects the Creami to the lid and blade on the pint. This metal thingy needs to stay clean or your lid will get stuck to the machine. I clean the metal thingy with a wet paper towel before AND after each use. A clean metal thingy is a happy metal thingy.

6. Use the proper ingredients from the recipe. I got the free ebook from the guy (Zach) and I’ve made probably 12 of his recipes. Many on repeat. If the recipe calls for whey casin blend protein powder then use that and not a plant based protein powder or it won’t be nearly as good as it can be.

Zach has more tips in this Cosmic Brownie protein ice cream video

Thanks, you gave a couple hints that I hadn't seen yet. I just watched the Cosmic Brownie one while eating dinner which was helpful. I'm going to have to go shopping in the morning for the ingredients. I have the 3 pints it came with in the dishwasher now so that I can prep the first ones tomorrow.

His coffee ice cream is going to be my first try. It's always been my favorite but I haven't been eating store bought since I stopped using cannabis since the caffeine was keeping me up. His suggestion of using decaf was brilliant. Now I just need to experiment with cold brew like him or a different brew. I use a dark french roast in the morning so something like it might work better for me.

What sweetener do you use? His book has using a zero cal one but I'm thinking of using cane sugar instead. I'm not a huge fan of the artificial ones. I'm already very low sugar with ice cream being the main culprit in my diet. So that would still be a huge cut over store bought. I'm also doing it straight without the oreos which are 70 calories and 6g of sugar.

Have you tried a slushi in one yet? With summer here I was thinking I might try to make a lemon one for during the day with the heat we're having. I used to love those as a teen when I'd go to Magic Mountain.

You’re gonna love the Coffee Oreo Chip protein ice cream. It’s one of my favorites. The macros on that one are insane! 36 grams of protein for only 226 calories.

Are you familiar with Allulose? It’s a zero calorie sweetener that actually lowers blood glucose. That’s what I use for my protein ice cream and also for baked goods.

I’ve made the Italian Ice recipes in his ebook. Both the strawberry and the watermelon Italian ice are good. I prefer the watermelon one but that’s just because I’m not a huge strawberry fan.

A lemon Italian ice sounds delicious! Let me know if you find a good recipe for it and I’ll try it out

I picked up the Swirl last weekend, that one has the ability to make soft serve as well.

Haven't tried it yet.

Yeah, it looks insane. I don't like oreos so I'm skipping that part so the marcos are going to be even more insane I might try one with some a piece of english toffee though which would come out about the same.

I haven't used Allulose. I've seen it suggested before. I've had bad experiences with the other ones in the past. They usually come across as too sweet for me. I'll give it a try though if it's not bad.

The strawberry one sounded good to me too. I already go through 5-6 lbs of them a week as a snack. So I was thinking of trying that and/or the ice cream recipe.

For a Lemon Italian ice or slushy I haven't seen a recipe that I like yet from a quick search. They all add way too much sugar. I have an idea though that I'm going to try. I recently found TrueCitrus for a drink mix-in. They're packets of crystalized lemon, lime, orange, or grapefruit. I've been using the lemon and lime ones for my water. So I might try making one using them to see how it comes out. I'll let you know if it works. Fry's carries them btw. They're in the aisle with the sugars and not with the drink mixes. I almost didn't find them.

The Allulose to sugar ratio is .7 to 1, meaning a gram of sugar is sweeter than Allulose. It’s derived from natural sugars found in figs and dates.

Monk fruit and erythritol are too sweet and have a bad aftertaste not to mention the other side effects.

Allulose is really good for baking. I used to make protein bread out of egg whites and the Allulose would brown the crust like real bread and make it soft.

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions. Once you make a few batches it will start to click. That reminds me…

Another tip I wished I knew from the start is to rotate the pint clockwise in the outer holder until it clicks. If the pint is not in the holder properly the lid won’t close. Simply turning the pint clockwise fixes this problem

What's the thought behind the ice cream. Are some of you on a low-carb diet?

I used to do an extreme form of Keto called Protein Sparing Modified Fast. Then I learned that you can eat whatever you want and lose weight if you hit your macros and stay in a calorie deficit. My goal is to eat 180 grams of protein per day. So I still make protein a priority but I’m cool with carbs as long as it fits my macros. The key is to stay in a calorie deficit to lose weight and maintain muscle by eating a lot of protein and working out routinely.

By bringing carbs back into my macros my food choices expanded dramatically. And as the guy in the video says, high protein, low calorie food that is delicious (like the ice cream discussed above) makes loosing weight enjoyable. I hope this helps

I've been on a paleo-type diet since I had my knee partially rebuilt in 2013. Ice cream is my cheat. The diet really helped me with aches and pains in my joints due to inflammation. I beat up my ankles, knees, and shoulders from sports. I was a catcher through high school.

I've also been trying to get in better shape again. I'm down 35 lbs in a little over a year and I've been losing a little too much muscle mass from it. I need to get more protein in my diet so that the final fat goes instead of lean mass. It's the other reason I was looking to make my own lower carb, high protein ice cream.

This sounds similar to me. The 180 is about what I'm shooting for too now. I'm still avoiding some carbs though. Carbs from fruit and veggies are cool but I still avoid grains as much as possible. So lettuce wraps instead of buns, etc. That's mainly due to the stuff in them that causes joint inflammation. Plus when I eat something like pizza or bread I feel sluggish and like crap now. I went so long without them at all that I don't really handle them well anymore.

I'm going to have to learn some of the language. Is it like a macro diet? I saw some links on a search.

That makes sense. Keto works for some. My problem was that I did the extreme version, PSMF, and it made my life miserable. It’s what body builders do a few weeks before a competition to lose fat as quick as possible. But I’m far from competing and I would get so hungry that I would binge eat. Then I would do PSMF again until I couldn’t take it anymore and binge again. Rinse and repeat. I was developing an eating disorder. This new way of eating called the flexible dieting lifestyle works for me and is 100% more enjoyable than the restrictive PSMF diet

Yeah, I don't do full keto either. I too much fruit and veggies for it. I'm more in the avoid grains and sugars camp. No processed foods. Stick with meats, veggies, and fruits and then cook from scratch. Basically eat real food, not processed junk. I generally follow the rule to only shop the edges of a grocery store and not the middle. The only thing I go into the center for is nuts since they always have them with the snacks.

I need to find where I can get casein powder though. I'm going to head to Sprouts now but I don't see it on their website. There's a One Stop by me, they might have it.

Thanks, I'll do that next time. I just picked up a tub of it at the One Stop near me. They had a 55/45 blend one. I probably over paid a little bit but I'm excited to get going with trying to make them.

Well, looks like I'm exchanging my unit tomorrow. I had made the slushie try last night. Today when I went to mix it I got water everywhere. I did a bunch of trouble shooing with it and it looks like I have a bad seal between the inner and outer canisters. Theres not enough pressure on it. If I put 3 layers of paper towels under the outer when I put it in, it barely leaks. So it shows that a seal isn't being made. Little disappointed but not the end of the world.

Did you freeze it overnight? There shouldn’t be any water. It should be frozen. Ideally 24 hours in the freezer

Yes, I froze over night. I have the Deluxe that has the drink modes and was using the slushie one. The container on the deluxe have 2 fill lines, a scoopable and a drinkable. Per the instructions, and a ton of YouTube videos that I double checked on, you fill up to the drinkable line to freeze, then add liquid to the scoopable line when you make one. It allows you to do drinks like a frozen margarita with alcohol in it.

Ok I have the base model and it has the sorbet function. I’m not familiar with the deluxe version. Did you find any YouTube videos addressing your slushi problems?

Try making a sorbet after letting it freeze for 24 hours. And don’t add alcohol or any liquid. Use the sorbet function once, then respin, and make a hole in the middle to add your mix ins and press the mix in button.

All I use my basic Creami for is to make ice cream and sorbet

I’m sorry that this is happening and I hope that you can exchange it.

Thanks, year, I found a couple other reports of it searching with Perplexity. ChatGPT was also a bit helpful with tracking down the issue last night. It's what lead to trying the paper towel trick.

I had a coffee ice cream prepped for tonight. It'll be ready to process at about 7 tonight. So I think I'm going to try to run it through tonight similar to your sorbet suggesting. I'll see how it goes and then do the return tomorrow when I can have all of the pieces to exchange.

Exchanging shouldn't be an issue. I bought it Sunday at Costco. So with their return policy it should be a cake walk.
