Nineteen people were arrested in Buenos Aires amid celebrations across Argentina after the national team claimed a dramatic 3-2 win over Egypt on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Five cops were injured, two of them suffered fractures, according to the Clarin newspaper.
Several thousand people gathered around the Obelisk to celebrate Lionel Messi and his team-mates. Well into the evening, they turned parts of the city centre into a party zone.
According to police sources cited by the Clarin, the problems began when fans threw objects at the police who were trying to clear the area after detecting some intoxicated and violent people.
It was above all the way Argentina team turned the game around in the closing minutes after trailing 2-0 that sent the fans into a frenzy and sparked hope for more.
But celebrations quickly turned into violence in the capital. There were arrests also in the provincial capital of San Miguel de Tucumán.
According to media reports, clashes broke out between fans and the police, and security forces used rubber bullets to clear the area.
Five people were arrested and two police officers were injured, the La Gaceta newspaper said.
There were also incidents in Mar del Plata, Córdoba e Rafaela.
Argentina will face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
