The World Cup has wrapped up and won't return to the United States before 2038 at the earliest, but at least one Denver Broncos player will stay closely connected to the world's game in the coming years.
Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto, 26, has joined OKC United's ownership group ahead of the soccer club's return to the USL Championship in 2028. The team, which has been on hiatus since 2022, plans to return with a new Oklahoma City stadium after securing investments from a group of athletes including Bonitto, Russell Westbrook, Baker Mayfield and Jozy Altidore, among others.
"This was the kind of long-term opportunity you don't pass on, and a chance to invest in a city I care about for the long haul," Bonitto said in a statement to Boardroom.
Bonitto played college football with the Oklahoma Sooners from 2018-2021 before being selected by Denver in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. A second-team All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, Bonitto has totaled 52 quarterback hits, 27.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and two defensive touchdowns (one pick-six and one fumble returned for a score) over the last two seasons.
Now entering his fifth season in the league, Bonitto will continue leading a pass rush that has led the NFL in sacks in each of the past two seasons. American football remains the top sport in the U.S., but soccer is growing, and Bonitto is buying in.
