After enduring two difficult seasons during Victor Wembanyama‘s tenure as the franchise centerpiece, the San Antonio Spurs have experienced a remarkable turnaround this season. The former lottery pick helped guide the team to the second-best record in the regular season and led them to the NBA Finals after eliminating the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Wembanyama has been the driving force behind the Spurs’ resurgence throughout the year. However, the young superstar’s difficulties became a major talking point during the opening game of the NBA Finals.

Victor Wembanyama’s Rocky Finals Opener Has Nick Wright Raising Concerns About His Focus

After knocking the Thunder out of championship contention, Wembanyama entered Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks surrounded by expectations of a dominant performance. Instead, he found it difficult to establish his usual rhythm.

Following Wembanyama’s challenging performance, sports analyst Nick Wright suggested that the Spurs star may have underestimated the challenge awaiting him after celebrating the Western Conference title.

“He was that emotional because his real internal emotions were, ‘Oh my god, I’m gonna be a champion.’ I don’t think he has registered yet quite the fight he’s in for,” Wright said.

During an episode of his podcast, Wright also dismissed the idea that Wembanyama was overwhelmed by the moment itself. Instead, he suggested the Spurs superstar has been physically drained from the team’s demanding playoff run.

“Victor Wembanyama has been running on a quarter tank since the double overtime game. And that was seven games ago,” Wright said. “What that and this is the tax of and I’ve been banging his drum, I know I’m right. Him going 49 minutes when headed into these playoffs, he had, I think, only gone above 40 twice in his career, and never above 43. All you have to do is look at what his shot profile has looked like since that game.”

Although Wembanyama’s Finals debut featured a team-leading 26 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks, the efficiency numbers told a different story. The Knicks successfully turned the game into a defensive battle, forcing him into difficult looks throughout the night. He converted just 6 of his 21 field-goal attempts and finished 2-of-9 from beyond the arc.

Victor Wembanyama Reveals His Mindset Heading Into Game 2

During a recent media session, Wembanyama addressed what needs to change as the Spurs prepare for a crucial Game 2.

“The reason I think we lost the game isn’t even technical or tactical, we need to approach the game with a better mental state,” Wembanyama said. “We just need to play our game. We just need to be normal, we don’t need to do anything incredible.”

The Spurs franchise player also offered insight into his personal approach when asked about legendary NBA icon Kobe Bryant and whether Bryant’s renowned work ethic has influenced him.

“I’d say that with age – even though I’m not old – and with all the experience we accumulate, I learn a lot. We learn a lot from the different people around us, and in a way, I’m building my own philosophy.”

The Spurs now find themselves in a familiar situation after losing the opening game of a playoff series. However, the stakes become considerably higher in Game 2, as they will need to defend home court before the series shifts to Madison Square Garden.
