Former Alabama football coach Nick Saban wrote to a judge on behalf of former Detroit Lions player Terrion Arnold after the cornerback was accused of several serious crimes. The news of Saban’s letter of support comes a day after a judge allowed Arnold to be released on a $1 million bond after being arrested late last week. Arnold, 23, played football at the University of Alabama from 2021 to 2023 under Saban’s leadership. He was drafted by the Lions in the first round in 2024.

Mike Rodak of 247Sports reported that Saban, who retired as Alabama’s head coach in 2024, wrote to a judge to vouch for the former SEC player amid his legal woes, according to NBC Sports.
“I write this letter because of the exceptional character I witnessed in Terrion Arnold over the more than six years I have known him,” Saban wrote. “Over the years, I have welcomed Terrion into my home and around my family. He has consistently treated my family and my staff with respect, humility and kindness.”
Saban went on to say that over the years, Arnold has “never once” given him reason to question his “conduct, integrity, or his respect for others.”
“I don’t ever recall him being involved in any behavior that would be described as aggressive or irresponsible,” he added.

Although Saban confirmed that he wasn’t “overly familiar” with the allegations, he asked the judge to consider his experiences with him as the court proceeds with Arnold’s case.
“Based on my experiences with Terrion, I remain committed to supporting him,” Saban wrote. “While I’m not overly familiar with or educated on the charges he is facing, and understand the seriousness of his situation before the court, I would respectfully ask the Court to take into account my experience with Terrion, his character, history and the positive impact he had on our program.”

According to a previous report from The Blast, Chief Judge Christopher C. Sabella ordered the release of Arnold yesterday, June 29, following his arrest the week prior.
Judge Sabella said he believes the court has “probable cause” to support the charges; however, he stated that the prosecution still has more work to do to prove Arnold was involved in the alleged crimes.
The judge denied the prosecution’s request to have Arnold tracked with an ankle monitor, noting that his every move would be followed by the paparazzi.
“If he is late for practice, ESPN will let us know,” the judge said. “If he violates the conditions of his bond, he will be found.”

Another report from The Blast revealed that Arnold was arrested last week and is accused of several counts of kidnapping and robbery.
The Tampa Police Department released a statement about Arnold’s arrest, claiming the former Lions player played a role in a “targeted armed robbery” that three young adult males with “visible injuries from being battered, held at gunpoint, and pistol-whipped before their personal property was stolen and … ordered to leave.”
“Around midnight on February 4, 2026, the victims drove to the apartment where [two of Arnold’s reported affiliates] hid inside a closet of one of the bedrooms. When the victims went in the bedroom, they said [the affiliates] grabbed them, held them at gunpoint and hit them,” the press release from the TPD read.

While the judge gave Arnold the chance to attend practices and games while out on bond, it appears the Detroit Lions aren’t taking a chance on him.
According to PEOPLE, the team recently announced that they’d parted ways with Arnold shortly after his release from jail.
Arnold’s attorney, R. Timothy Jansen, denied the allegations against the NFL player, saying, “Mr. Arnold had no involvement whatsoever in the activities that led to those arrests. He did not participate in, nor was he present for, any conduct related to the alleged offenses. There is no evidence in police reports, text messages, or witness statements that implicates Mr. Arnold in any way.”
