A's first baseman Nick Kurtz landed on the IL back on July 11 with a right thumb capsule sprain that had led to him keeping the thumb immobilized for a number of days. Now, out of the splint, Kurtz is already taking batting practice and fielding ground balls.
He's also on the road with the A's, a sign that he could be available to make his return to the lineup sometime in the next week.
"There's no guarantee that the timeline matches with him being able to play, but he's close enough to be working out," A's manager Mark Kotsay said before Monday's 5-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. "If things really progress well, then there's a chance that by the weekend he could possibly be available."
Kotsay did mention that the timeline for Kurtz's return on the road trip is potentially aspirational, and that he was hopeful things would trend in that direction.
The A's offense scored a total of six runs on the road trip before the All-Star break, including just two runs in the final three games without Kurtz. After the break the offense has come around a little bit, scoring 4, 15, 2, and 5 runs and going 2-2.
After hitting the first home run of his MLB career in the top of the second inning, Joshua Kuroda-Grauer left the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, a couple of innings after fouling a ball directly off his testicles.
After spending a little time on the ground with the trainer, JKG remained in the game initially, and ended up with a single into center for his second hit of the game.
Donovan Walton came in to play second base, while Alika Williams slid to third.
The team announced that he left with a testicle contusion, and Kotsay said after the game that he was getting an ultrasound done and that they were awaiting the results.
There should be a further update before tomorrow's game.
Thomas was hit on the left wrist in the third inning of this game, and ended up being pulled in the bottom of the fourth with a left wrist contusion. He was replaced by Lawrence Butler, who ended up going 2-for-3 off the bench.
"Colby's X-ray came back negative," Kotsay said after the game. "It'll be more of a pain tolerance [situation]. We'll see how the swelling is tomorrow. We escaped one there with Colby."
With the Diamondbacks expected to throw another left-hander on Tuesday in Kohl Drake, who will be making his MLB debut, the A's will have to roll with either Butler or Carlos Cortes — both lefty bats — if Thomas is unable to go.
