CHAMPAIGN, IL — A month after Nick Dorn played his way into the Indiana basketball starting lineup, the junior is trying to find his shot again.
Dorn, who started getting more time on the court after Tayton Conerway suffered an ankle injury in January, had a hot start to his expanded role. He had a four-game stretch of scoring in double digits as his minutes increased, and he became that important third scorer that IU was looking for behind Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries.
He was essential in IU’s upset of Purdue with 18 points on Jan. 27, then followed that up with 26 points in 48 minutes in an overtime win against UCLA on Jan. 31. He took over that starting spot full-time, even after Conerway recovered as the rising star IU needed to make a late push for an NCAA tournament berth.
After that UCLA game, though, he started to lose his shot.
In the four games since then, Dorn has shot just 4 of 28 from the field. He shot 0 of 5 against Illinois on Sunday, scoring just one point after he went 1 of 2 from the line at the beginning of the game.
Doyel: Has IU coach Darian DeVries overachieved with this small, slow, streaky roster?
“I think getting some good quality (shots) is part of it,” coach Darian DeVries said of Dorn’s shooting slump. “He can be maybe a little anxious at times. But Nick’s a great shooter, he’s 0-for-4, so we’d love to see those get knocked down. And he will, he’ll come back.”
And IU (17-9, 8-7 Big Ten) will need Dorn as a shooting threat again as it goes through the final stretch of its regular season.
