If you see your friends indulging in the Ice Bucket Challenge this summer, don't check your calendar – it's still 2026.
During 2014, the trend – which was designed to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and encourage donations to research – spread across social media like wildfire. How's it done? Well, you either dump a bucket of ice water over your own head, or have someone do it for you, and capture it on film for posterity.
Now, just days after announcing to the world his ALS diagnosis, former NFL running back Chris Johnson is pushing for a revival of the viral trend. His daughter took part in an Ice Bucket Challenge and called out NBA star LeBron James to go next in her video, while Johnson challenged multiple former teammates.
It didn't take too long for the trend to start making the rounds. Johnson challenged multiple former NFL stars to participate, including Marshawn Lynch and former Titans teammates LenDale White and Adam "Pacman" Jones.
Lynch and White have already stepped up to answer the call, with the gauntlet being thrown down to former NFL star and current Colorado head coach Deion Sanders and former NFL quarterback Vince Young. As more former stars answer the call, there are sure to be more familiar NFL faces who step up and take the plunge.
Johnson made the call for people to take on the challenge after seeing the outpouring of support from fans and fellow former NFL players amid his health struggles. Johnson rose to fame as one of the top running backs in the league during the 2000's and 2010s, setting the single-season record for yards from scrimmage with 2,509 total yards in 2009.
