Earlier this week, the NFL was shaken by the death of Rondale Moore, who tragically took his own life at the age of 25.
Since then, tributes have poured in from his fellow players across the league, while others have used the opportunity to call out what they see as shortcomings by those in power in the league to help players adequately manage their mental health.
Recently, Eagles wideout A.J. Brown shared his thoughts on social media and delivered a heartfelt message to his fellow NFL stars across the league. He made an effort to remind players that sometimes luck is not on their side as NFL players. But it's important not to let difficult times impact your view of yourself or your self-worth.
"Guys, I want you all to understand in the NFL community, man," Brown said. "Things aren't always going to go your way. You may get everything you desire. Sometimes this game is not friendly. People are going to say nasty things about you, call you this, call you that. But none of those things in that moment define you."
Brown also went on to share that he sadly also used to struggle with suicidal thoughts earlier in his career, but is grateful for how his life has turned out in the years since. He made a point to use his story to urge fellow players not to give into that type of thinking – and to demonstrate that while things may sometimes seem difficult in the moment, things will get better.
"But don't take the easy way out," Brown said. "I once thought that was the way. I was 23 years old, 23 years old, and I thought the same thing. I thought the same thing, man. I had so much life ahead of me, I have so many family members that love me, I have accomplished so many things...God has so much in store for you guys, so much more than just a game of football, guys. And I'm only talking like this because we're a community and we care about each other, we have to care about each other."
